Excellent Wireless Quality for Wireless Internet.
I love this router. For home use of wireless access to your internet connection, it is excellent. The signal was strong throughout my two-story house, and more importantly the internet throughput was nearly identical to the wired speed. My upstairs bedroom (walls, ceilings in between) was especially problematic on my old router, which made my xbox internet connection spotty, slow to download, and extremely slow to start videos and frequently paused videos to buffer again. With this router, I get a superb signal, and throughput to match, and my xbox works normally, and videos load quickly and with great quality to match my wired PC for internet streaming. Upstairs, on DSL internet with 3 Mbps down / .75 Mbps up, my old router achieved 1.33 Mbps down / 0.66 up, and this achieved 2.90 Mbps down / 0.73 up, which was nearly the same as the wired speeds from my PC connected to the router. For wired speeds it did not cause a slow down. Before, directly with my DSL modem, my wired speeds were 2.89 down / 0.72 up, and now after it was 3.00-3.07 down / 0.66-0.72 up. So the extra hop didn't seem noticeable, but overall there was always variance with the old or new router. Oddly, the download speed tended to tick up a notch, and upload speed slightly down a notch, which is still just piggy backing on the old router that is the DSL modem. Perhaps the QoS on this router prioritizes differently, or just real world variance. It was just a different ratio overall on some tests. So for a wireless internet connection, this router solved all of my problems. I really couldn't be more thrilled.
Internet access, downloads, and streaming is limited to your actual internet speed, such as 3 Mbps DSL, which uses only a small part of the states speeds of this router, making it effectively an N003 router. Above your internet speed, the other 297 Mbps is only for within devices on your local network within your house, and limited by each specific device's card too, such as older wireless G, or N150 (single antenna), etc. I think this N300 router does a fine job for the usual home user doing a casual amount of local network transfers, but I have not stressed it. If you are really serious about tons of local network traffic and streaming between devices, you probably aren't looking at this N300 router, and instead looking at N600, N900, and the newest AC protocol routers. So for the usual home router, I think this N300 is great for the average home user. The back of the box clearly shows where this one sits among the current generation of technology this year.
Setup was a breeze. Connecting to it via the IP address given to you on a card was trivial, but just remember to connect directly to this router if using a wired connection to do it. It walks you through optionally changing your router admin name, password, SSID, and security key. You can also turn off the SSID broadcasting (which I recommend) for more security. But the changes to the SSID and disabling of SSID broadcasting did not take affect without rebooting the router (an option under the admin menu) which was not clear that I had to do that after saving. For my xbox to work properly, I had to enable UPnP (QoS - PnP menu, save, Admin menu - reboot). They give you good quick start guides for Apple & Android portable devices & PCs (mac & windows), and a CD that you don't need to use (I never used it). I had my network working in minutes. Xbox took a few minutes to read up on the error about NAT issue, which xbox help pointed to enabling UPnP as I mentioned. I had no problem at all using VPN for my work. Both my mac and windows laptop easily connected to it too.

I like that Buffalo and a few other router manufacturers are shifting the firmware driving the devices to open source projects. Many manufacturers stop supporting routers after a year or two leaving security vulnerabilities unpatched. Presumably having the DD-WRT foundation behind the firmware means it will continue to be patched and upgraded even if Buffalo decides to stop producing the hardware.
That said this initial version is lacking some key features like an easy way to activate a guest network. They need to make the firmware upgrade process easier for consumers too.
This router also costs twice as much as another Buffalo product that has the identical hardware but is running Buffalo's own firmware ( - affiliate link). It's a pretty large price to pay for getting less functional software.
